Cost of living crisis and divorce

A recent survey has shown that many are considering delaying their divorce or separation due to the cost of living crisis, particularly where they have children.

Living together can cause many problems once a relationship ends, as was found during the lockdown, when there was a marked increase in domestic abuse as a result of couples who would otherwise separate living under the same roof.

Financial pressures are often one of the factors leading to relationship breakdown, which is being made worse by the cost of living crisis, with people delaying important decisions because of the economically uncertain future.

It is important to have legal advice on the options for separation, to be able to weigh up the financial and emotional issues involved and before making any important decision, as delaying is in itself a decision which can have implications.  For example, living together under the same roof after separation can mean that family dynamics can change and one parent who was previously not so involved with the day to day care of the children may start taking on a greater role which can have implications for arrangements post separation.

At Curwens we have three experienced family lawyers who would be happy to assist you if you are thinking of separating or are separating for an initial chat about your situation. Contact us today for expert advice.
