Domestic Abuse in Lockdown

Since the official lockdown began in the UK on 23rd March 2020, there has been a huge surge in the number of domestic abuse cases. Due to the restrictions currently in place, many victims are being forced to spend most, if not all, of their day with their abuser. Under ordinary circumstances, many spouses or partners use everyday activities or chores, such as the working day, the food shop or the school run as an excuse to be away from their abuser, if only for a short period of time. Under the current strict lockdown rules, victims may find they are faced with dealing with their abusive partner, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It is feared perpetrators may also use the situation as a further means to exert control over their victims. However, help is still available, and the government has confirmed that victims will be able to leave their home in order to seek help and assistance if they are in danger. The Government has further confirmed additional funds will be provided to various charities in order to assist with the sudden surge in cases.

Victims can seek help and guidance by contacting the National Domestic Abuse Helpline through Refuge on 0808 2000 247 or by visiting their website here. Or through Women’s Aid who are now offering a live online chat facility. Both websites provide a ‘quick exit’ button just in case a person needs to suddenly exit the website. If someone finds themselves in immediate danger they, of course, should dial 999.

Here at Curwens LLP we have a team of expert solicitors experienced in dealing with domestic abuse cases. During the lockdown, we are still able to offer appointments remotely and can offer advice on measures which can be taken to prevent domestic abuse, such as an emergency application to the Court for a Non-Molestation Order or for an Occupation Order.
